The hot 2.3-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine is a beauty. Unlike the Mazda6 MPS which used all-wheel drive, the '3 MPS only has front-wheel drive.
The engine isn't actually trying to accelerate. It is using "Rev hang" before downshifting in order to try to ensure there's as little fuel and particulates going into that still not hot exhaust system. Again, this is to reduce carbon build up and reduce emissions while the engine is not at operating temp.
